Bedtime used to be a time of dread for us, as many parents. The fear of night terrors and nightmares left us wondering what the night would look like. The agony of seeing our 6 year old son being held captive by the enemy and not even be able to respond, was extremely difficult. It went on for 2 years. We were committed to trying everything to help him. No dairy before bed. Encouraging him to discuss times throughout the day when he had felt embarassed or hurt and allowing him to process those emotions before he went to bed. Reading Scripture over him in his bed. Singing a family hymn together before sleep. Speaking the Name and Blood of Jesus to cover him and to ask for God to hide him from the enemy. Adamantly interceding for him daily and together with my husband. And speaking his identity over him. These became our routine. I believe each one of them played a part in restoring balance and order over our home. And I’m thankful to say, Praise the Giver of all, that season has passed for us.
I know there are others who struggle with this! This is a battle of the enemy. According to God, the husband has the authority over the family and we as Christians have the authority over the enemy. Jesus gave it to us! Luke 10:19 The husband should speak life and the Name and Blood of Jesus over the child and call forth peace and balance and order over your household.
Every parent is responsible to call out their child’s identity and tell them who they are in Christ. In a world where we are quick to let our children decide for themselves who they are, we must tell them who God intended them to be: His child, holy and dearly loved. That’s not to say children shouldn’t continue towards their natural bend Proverbs 22:6. God designed them toward a natural inclination for different talents. As we see those talents and gifts within, we call them out and nurture those so they will grow. But we as parents must provide the lens of the Word that enables children to see who they are. To say “yes, daughter, God made you a girl, to one day become a woman of faith, with a purpose for His kingdom.” and “Yes, son, God made you a boy, to grow in stature and favor with God and man.” So here is what I have for you. Read them while your child is awake, drifting to sleep, and whenever you are walking along the road. Deut 6:6-9
